What’s the Difference Between Change Management and Change Enthusiasm®?

By Cassandra Worthy

Change management is the process of planning, communicating, and executing organizational change. Change Enthusiasm® is the methodology for working with the emotions that determine whether people actually adopt that change. One is the plan. The other is what makes the plan work.

I get asked this question often, usually by leaders who've already run a textbook change management process and are confused about why adoption still isn't sticking. Here's the distinction.

What Change Management Covers

Change management is the operational side of a transition: timelines, communication plans, training schedules, stakeholder mapping, org charts, rollout sequencing. It answers the question, "What needs to happen, and in what order?"

This is necessary work. No transformation succeeds without it. But it's built on an assumption that doesn't always hold: that if the logic and logistics are sound, people will follow.

Change Enthusiasm®  Humanizes Change

Change Enthusiasm®addresses the layer traditional change management usually treats as a footnote: the emotional and motivational reality of the people living through the change. It answers a different question: "What do people need to feel and believe for this change to actually take hold?"

That distinction matters more than it sounds like it should. Plenty of organizations run a technically sound change process and still watch adoption stall. The plan wasn't the problem. Nobody addressed what people needed to feel and believe for the plan to actually hold.

Change management manages the transition. Change Enthusiasm® humanizes it.

A Simple Way to Tell Them Apart

  Change Management  Change Enthusiasm®
Core question  What needs to happen, and when?  What do people need to feel and believe?
Primary tools  Timelines, communication plans, training  Emotional processing tools, mindset work, C.H.A.N.G.E. Traits®
What it explains well  The sequence and logistics of a transition  Why adoption succeeds or stalls despite a sound plan
What it misses on its own  Why people resist a technically sound plan  The operational sequencing a transition still needs

Why You Need Both

These aren't competing approaches. Change management without the emotional layer produces a plan nobody actually follows. Change Enthusiasm without the operational layer produces engaged people with no clear path forward.

The organizations that get transformation right treat both as required, not optional. Change Enthusiasm Global focuses on the layer that most change management approaches overlook, so it complements the operational planning your organization is likely already doing rather than replacing it.

What This Looks Like in Practice

Our research on change and emotion consistently shows the same pattern: a majority of employees report feeling powerless when change happens to them rather than with them.

That's not a communication failure or a training gap. It's an emotional one, and it's exactly the layer that change management, on its own, isn't built to address.

Organizations that add the emotional layer to a sound change management process see it in the numbers: faster adoption, less rework, and behavior change that actually holds months after the initiative launched. You can see specific examples in our case studies.

Start Humanizing Change

If your organization already has strong change management in place and adoption is still stalling, that's usually a sign the missing piece is emotional, not operational. The Change Growth Accelerator™ is where leaders build that missing skill directly.

What Is Change Enthusiasm®?

Change Enthusiasm® is a methodology for harnessing the emotional energy created by change, rather than suppressing it, and using it to drive personal and organizational growth. It treats emotion as the primary lever for successful change adoption.
